Every day counts in a child’s education and School Attendance Matters. Chronic absenteeism has been defined as missing at least 10 percent of days in a school year for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences. The Carson City School District has hovered around 25% chronic absenteeism. Fourth grade students in Ms. Allie Davis’ class at Bordewich Bray Elementary School received a special treat yesterday as actor Khleo Thomas, famously known for his role as Zero in the beloved film "Holes," made a guest appearance via Zoom. The free, non-competitive and innovative baseball program for boys and girls ages 5-13, focuses on education, health and bullying prevention, providing a holistic approach to community sports. More than 48 Carson High School (CHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. When Eagle Valley Middle School English Teacher Michaela Filocamo learned her 5-year-old nephew was diagnosed with Leukemia, she felt impressed to make a bold statement in his name to honor and support him and other children battling cancer by donating her hair and funds raised (by her students, families and school colleagues) to the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Free School Meals Ending, Families Must Apply Before May 24, 2024

State funding for free school meals including breakfast and lunch will end May 30, 2024. In an effort to support student meals in school, the Carson City School District Food and Nutrition Services department is asking parents and families to apply for free and reduced meals (educational benefits). Five CHS HOSA Students Take State, 35 Others Shine in Competition

Carson High School (CHS) Career and Technical Education (CTE) HOSA – Future Health Professionals – had 42 students attend the State Leadership Conference last week. The students competed in 16 different events. Carson High Students Admire Latino Artist Guillermo Bert Exhibit at NMOA

Guillermo Bert, an artist who was born in Santiago de Chile in 1959, was recently featured at the Nevada Museum of Art (NMOA), in Reno. Carson High School Heritage Spanish 2 students, who had previously studied the artist and some of his works, were able to visit the exhibition Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024. As a tenth-grade student, Haven is not sure what she would like to do after high school, but knowing she has reached her full potential, she has her eyes set on earning a bachelor's or master's degree. This evening during the Winterfest Dance in Senator Square, Carson High School named AJ Marhevka and Brooklyn Grundy as the 2024 Winterfest King and Queen, respectively. Additionally, Kekoa Mitchell and Addy Morgan were named the 2024 Junior Class Winterfest Prince and Princess, Alex Martinez and Norah Schultz were named the 2024 Sophomore Class Winterfest Prince and Princess and Cruz Gonzales and Maria Pimentel Avelar were named the 2024 Freshman Class Winterfest Prince and Princess. The Carson City School Board took time to recognize band students from Carson High School in their January 23 meeting. Freshman Jacob Blandford, French Horn; Senior Drea Cabral, Clarinet; Senior Nathan Parsons, Trumpet; and Senior Tessa Payan, Percussion, all earned a spot in All-State Band, which comprises the top band students from across the state of Nevada. New Leadership for the Carson City School Board

At their first meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, the Carson City School District School Board of Trustees nominated and voted in new leadership for the Carson City school board. Trustee Joe Cacioppo, District 7, was named the newest president. He replaced former President and now Immediate Past President Laurel Crossman, District 2, as the school board’s leader. Trustees Lupe Ramirez, District 1, and Mike Walker, District 5, were also named vice president and clerk, respectively. Ramirez replaced former Vice President Cacioppo and Walker replaced former Clerk Ramirez. Each of the three leaders will serve one-year terms.  READ MORE...
