Those who think teenagers are lazy have never met David Gutierrez-DeJesus. A conscientious student, enthusiastic musician and dedicated do-gooder, David is on the go from morning until night, doing his part to make life better for himself and those around him. For these reasons, and so many more, David is CHS’s Senior in the Spotlight this week.

David currently has a 3.28 GPA and has earned 28 credits (24 credits are needed to receive a standard diploma). He will have 34.5 credits by graduation. David has earned his OSHA certification and will receive a Career Readiness diploma for completing the Agriculture CTE pathway, which includes classes in veterinary science. He is still considering whether to major in that subject in college, but he is steadfast about pursuing opportunities in music.

When life gets tough, David says he finds solace in music and a sense of joy in the band room. David has been participating in band since the fifth grade. He plays the trombone and euphonium in CHS’ Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Band. He has performed with the Pep Band, pit orchestra, Winter Guard and Winter Drumline. Last year he was the assistant Drum Major and this year he is the section leader for low bass. As the Marching Band’s Spirit Captain, his goal is to foster stronger bonds with the Cheerleaders and Flag team while infusing positivity and enthusiasm to his bandmates.

David is most recognizable for his generous hugs, smiles and sincere goodwill towards others. He has volunteered numerous hours to charity events including food drives for Advocates to End Domestic Violence, the Ron Woods Center and FISH and volunteering at a bible study camp. “Helping out the community is something I take pride in and if someone needs help, I will always try my best to be available,” he said.

“I am a very approachable person, and if anyone needs a new friend, wants to talk or hang out, I am available.”
