The Carson High School (CHS) Boys 5A Varsity Cross Country Team was named 2023 FALL season State Academic Team Champions by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), the non-profit governing body of high school athletics in the Silver State. The team will be recognized at the NIAA State Cross Country Championships set for Saturday, Nov. 4, at Rancho San Rafael, in Reno.

Each season NIAA and Jostens, the NIAA's corporate partner, present a special award to the varsity sport teams with the highest grade point average (GPA) in each classification. The team GPA is determined by taking the individual GPA's of varsity team members from the previous semester and then computing an overall team average. Carson High’s Cross Country GPA team average was 3.73.

The NIAA considers this state academic championship award to certainly be equal to the athletic championship award. As the NIAA, coaches and administrators should always stress, the competitors are students first, then athletes.

Congratulations to all student-athletes for their efforts both in the classroom and at the athletic venue. The CHS Boys Varsity team is made up of 11th graders Sawyer Macy and Alex Miner, 10th graders Nate Freed, Sean Thornton and Mark Walther, and 9th graders Quinn Kuchnicki, Ivan Romeo and Dean Parr (alternate).
