This week’s Senior in the Spotlight is Carson High School’s Isaiah Hurlbert. A two-sport varsity-lettered athlete, Isaiah works hard both on and off the field. This year, Isaiah was named honorable mention all-region wide receiver, and has been a competitive member of the CHS Track sprint team. With a GPA of 3.98, Isaiah is an excellent AP and honors student, who always works to challenge himself in order to grow.
In his college essay, Isaiah wrote, “Throughout my experience in school, sports and many other activities in my life, I have always had one goal. This goal wasn't to be the best at everything I do. It is to make an impact.”
Isaiah certainly has made an impact at CHS with his compassionate spirit, his desire to help others and his witty sense of humor. He credits much of his success to the support of his parents. Isaiah’s mother is an elementary school teacher at Mark Twain Elementary, and she is one of his greatest role models in his pursuit for higher education as he watched her complete her degree during his elementary years. His father is a local pastor, and Isaiah strives to serve the community through volunteer work and commitment to others like he has seen modeled by him.
Outside of school, Isaiah has spent time volunteering for the Dream Center and through his church, First Christian Church, supporting their efforts to deliver food to families in need. He has also maintained a part time job, and has somehow found time to balance school, friends, family and sports successfully.
Isaiah will be a Career and Technical Education (CTE) completer in CHS’s first Teach and Train cohort this spring; in this pathway he has learned about what it takes to be an educator. He has spent time both volunteering in his mother’s classroom and in local classrooms as part of his CTE program, and he has decided to pursue this honorable career.
In the fall, he plans to attend Southern Oregon University, relying on as many scholarships as he can get, in order to study education with the hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher. Isaiah will continue to use his positive, resilient spirit to make an impact on those around him, and CHS wishes him the best as he begins his next chapter towards excellence.
